Analytical Testing and Analysis of Nicotine Potency

Nicotine is a potent parasympathomimetic alkaloid and traditionally used as a stimulant to relieve withdrawal symptoms in smokers. It is naturally produced from the nightshade plant family and is a highly addictive substance. Although the lethal dose of Nicotine in humans has never be determined, high potency levels causes nicotine poisoning and is potentially more harmful to non-users. As well as being the main cause of smoking addiction, Nicotine can be used as an effective tool to help smokers quit.  Nicotine replacement therapy products are alternative ways to allow Nicotine to enter the bloodstream without inhaling tobacco smoke.

In 2014 the European Council introduced new measures to regulate and control the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products. Under article 3 section b) of Directive 2014/40/EU the maximum allowable nicotine emission level is 1mg of Nicotine per cigarette. IFS Laboratories can provide a wide range of analysis of tobacco and tobacco related products including Nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) using HS-GC-MS Methods.
