Analytical Testing and Analysis of Terpenes

Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, naturally produced by a variety of plants including those belonging to the Cannabaceae group such as the Cannabis plant. They often have strong odor to protect the plant that produces them from parasitic predators. Terpenes and terpenoids are the primary constituents of essential oils of many plants and flowers. The effects of terpenes can vary, and some are known to be successful in inducing sleep, mental stimulation and relieves anxiety. There is now growing evidence that terpenes found in cannabis products can influence the effects that Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) can have on the endocannabinoid system when consumed for medicinal purposes, therefore can improve the effectiveness of pain relief. Using Headspace Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry techniques (HS-GC-MS) and Ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) we can quickly and accurately profile both the cannabinoid and terpene compounds.
