Cannabinoid Profiling

Analytical Testing and Analysis of CBD & THC Using HPLC

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis products. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), (Delta9-THC or Delta8-THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are the most psychoactive compounds, however there are 12 known psychoactive cannabinoids that are naturally present in the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L) and could be present in the extract or isolate. Quantitative analysis of these psychoactive compounds are essential, using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) we can identify and quantify the different cannabinoid compounds with accuracy.

CBD Legislation in the UK

Historically, CBD legislation in the UK has been pretty firm. However, there has been a lot of movement within the industry recently with new legislation set to be introduced next month that will affect companies selling products within the UK.

Novel Food Application CBD

As of the 31st March 2021 all UK CBD companies selling products for consumption must now submit a Novel Foods Application. However, this does not apply to topical products which have to comply with stringent cosmetic regulations. Since the March 31st deadline only products with a validated application are allowed to stay on the shelves. The CBD market is still very unregulated in the UK with many products not containing CBD at all, THC levels higher than the legal limit of 1mg or even heavy metals or chemicals you would not want to be putting in your body. The new CBD Novel Food Application will ensure better quality products available within the market through the tighter regulations.

Any CBD companies applying for the Novel Food Application must have all products analysed for the following:

  • ADME Evaluation
  • Full Chemical Analysis
  • Microbiological Testing
  • Stability Testing
  • Toxicological Evaluation

How do I know if my business getting the most out of our current CBD testing facilities?

There are several basic criteria upon which testing laboratories should be selected. Most importantly are you currently testing your products with an Independent, UKAS accredited Testing Laboratory? Other main factors are:

  • Is the associated testing activity stated on the laboratories latest UKAS testing schedule
  • Accuracy of their results
  • Turnaround time (24 hours – look below)
  • Nature of analysis services provided
  • Additional services
  • Cost
  • What is their accreditation status (request to see their latest accreditation certificate or alternatively search the UKAS website, noting their accreditation lab number)

Is a UK lab the right approach for my CBD business?

Whether you are an importer or exporter of products, testing laboratories play a key role to ensuring product safety and compliance to regulatory requirements. The need for independent verifications and the upcoming FSA regulations will lead to the production of high-value products and increased CBD acceptance in the UK. With this in mind we should see a rise in CBD companies relocate to the UK for its growing market, and in turn will require independent 3rd party verification of their products.

Why you should use a UKAS accredited testing laboratory?

There are a host of reasons why you should use a UKAS accredited testing laboratory. Most importantly is to: minimise risk, keep your reputation, reduce costs, demonstrate credibility and defend against litigation. UKAS is appointed as the sole national accreditation body for the United Kingdom and operates under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). An independent testing laboratory accredited by UKAS have been assessed against internationally recognised standards (ISO 17025) to demonstrate their competence, impartiality and performance capability. The use of a UKAS accredited laboratory is a powerful demonstration that you have exercised all due diligence in the selection and appointment of a reputable service provider.

What is the difference between an isolate and full spectrum product?

Full Spectrum Hemp and CBD raw materials & products contain more cannabinoids and other natural compounds, while CBD isolate is solely the CBD cannabinoid without any others. Full Spectrum oil products have the advantage of containing many different cannabinoids and terpenes.
